Used Kayaks
Kayak
renting stores tend to sell second hand kayaks at very
reasonable rates. Though used kayaks can also be bought
from individuals or other stores, buying from such
renting stores makes sense because it is important for
these stores to maintain certain quality
standards.
Any damage
beyond a limit may mean loss of business. Therefore,
kayak stores tend to sell used kayaks much before they
really need to be sold. Boat selling stores, or other
marine goods selling stores may also have a few used
kayaks to sell.
Such stores
often sell the piece that they retained for display. This
means that the kayak may have only been used for
demonstration, and therefore it could be as good as new.
At times, such stores try to phase out the outdated
models, and even sell the stock of outdated kayaks they
have at much cheaper rates.
Fall is the
off-season for kayaking. Ideally, kayaks should be bought
in this off-season or a few days before that. This is
because most kayak renting stores, and boat selling
stores are inclined to hold on to their vessels during
the peak season, as it is more than likely that they can
get a better price in such season than during the
off-season.
Therefore,
the purchaser can hope to get much better bargain during
the fall. While buying used kayaks, the purchaser should
check whether or not it can be used.
This means,
the purchaser has to spend some time scrutinizing the
whole length of the vessel, especially the hull, to see
if there are any signs of wear and tear, and the extent
of such wear and tear. In addition, the purchaser should
also inspect the signs of any previous repair and check
whether the problem is likely to recur.
At times
the hull may have been patched during a repair work. In
such cases, it is better not to buy this used kayak.
However, not all repairs are obvious.
There are
experts in boat repairing who can cleverly camouflage
such repaired parts on the kayak. The person who intends
to purchase the kayak should therefore not hesitate in
testing the crucial parts such as skeg or rubber and be
sure that they do function as expected.
Even taking
a test ride on the river for a short distance is
advisable. However, not every store or seller would be
agreeable to this request. By asking the seller to allow
such a test ride, the purchaser effectively puts the
seller on defensive.
If there is
any problem with the vessel, then the seller would
hesitate to allow the prospective buyer take the kayak
for a ride, and that would be a dead give away that there
is something wrong.
The
purchaser needs to take his time in identifying the used
kayak on which he wants to spend his monies. There is
ample choice available, and there is no
rush.
